About Matthew 17:20 and the Parable of the Mustard Seed

The image of faith the size of a mustard seed appears three times in the Gospels, in Matthew 17:20, where Jesus tells His disciples that even faith this small can move mountains; in Matthew 13:31–32 and Mark 4:30–32, where the mustard seed becomes a parable of the Kingdom of Heaven, the smallest of all seeds growing into the largest of garden plants; and in Luke 17:6, where Jesus repeats the mustard-seed-faith image. The mustard seed in first-century Judea was proverbial for the smallest visible thing, a single seed measuring about one to two millimeters across, and the plant it grew into could reach ten to twelve feet, large enough that the birds of the air made nests in its branches. The teaching is one of the most quoted images in the New Testament for the disproportionate power of small faith, used across centuries in sermons on perseverance, beginnings, and the slow growth of belief. The verse most often quoted is the closing line of Matthew 17:20: "Nothing will be impossible for you." Faith as Small as a Mustard Seed Can Move Mountains captures the parable's full arc in a single composition, Jesus at the foot of the hills with starter sprouts, and the fully-grown tree at the summit.
