About Exodus 14 and the Parting of the Red Sea
The parting of the Red Sea is recorded in Exodus 14:1–31 and is the single greatest act of deliverance in the Old Testament. After the ten plagues, Pharaoh releases the Israelites, then changes his mind and pursues them with his army. Trapped between the Egyptian chariots and the sea, the Israelites cry out in fear. Moses stretches his hand over the water, and a strong east wind blows all night, dividing the sea into two walls with dry ground in between. The Israelites cross, and when the Egyptians follow, the waters return and the army is drowned. The scene is celebrated in the Song of Moses in Exodus 15 and echoed across the Bible, in Psalm 78, Psalm 106, Isaiah 51, and the Christian tradition of baptism as a passage from slavery to freedom. The single verse most often quoted is Exodus 14:14: "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." Moses & the Parting of the Red Sea captures the moment Moses stretches his hand over the water, the towering walls rising, the path opening, the crowd already beginning to cross.
