Framed, or gallery-wrapped
The framed option adds a two inch wood surround built in house, giving a piece weight on a large wall and tying it to the wood already in the room.
No Frame ships gallery-wrapped, the image continuing around all four edges so the sides are finished from every angle. Lost Sheep, The 99 & The 1 and Jesus Leaves the 99 are ordered that way most.
Why canvas suits a bright room
Canvas has an open surface with nothing over it, so a lamp or a window lands on pigment instead of bouncing off acrylic. In a west-facing room that is usually the deciding factor.
The weave holds a faint texture that catches raking light, giving a large piece depth from across the room. Archival giclee inks hold the beige and ivory true indoors.
Hanging and caring for one
A canvas up to 30 inches wide hangs on one hook rated for ten pounds. Wider than that, use two hooks set a third of the way in from each edge.
Dust with a dry microfiber cloth and skip household sprays, which can lift pigment. Canvas also handles humidity well, holding flat where paper eventually ripples.
Before you order a canvas
What is a gallery-wrapped canvas?
Gallery-wrapped means the printed canvas is stretched around solid wood stretcher bars and secured at the back, with the image continuing over all four edges. No frame, no mat, no glass, and the finished piece sits about two inches off the wall and reads as a clean modern block of art from any angle.
What is a giclee print?
Giclee is a printmaker's word for a fine art inkjet print, coined around 1991 by Jack Duganne from the French gicler, to spray, so that gallery work off an Iris press would not be filed with commercial proofs. No standards body owns the term, so it guarantees nothing by itself. What it points at is worth checking: pigment ink, and a cotton or rag substrate.
What is the difference between a canvas print and a poster?
A poster is dye ink on coated paper, printed in volume and priced to be replaced. A canvas print of this kind is pigment ink on cotton canvas, stretched over wood and made one at a time. Pigment sits on the fiber as solid particles where dye soaks in and shifts, which is most of the difference in how each ages.
Where can you buy modern Christian art?
Christian Modern prints and frames every piece in a Los Angeles studio and ships worldwide. Beyond that, a seller worth buying from names the substrate and the ink instead of saying art print. The work should be photographed on a real wall and not only as a flat file, and the reviews should be readable somewhere other than their own website.
Should I choose canvas or a framed paper print?
Canvas suits large walls and bright rooms, since the open surface takes direct light without reflecting it. Framed paper prints suit smaller spaces and gallery groupings, where the one inch frame and acrylic screen give a crisp edge. Room size and available light decide it more often than subject does.
Does a canvas print fade over time?
Direct sun is what does the damage. It does it to anything hung in front of a south window regardless of how it was printed. Pigment inks resist it far better than the dye inks in a poster. Hung on a wall that never takes a direct beam, a pigment canvas holds its color for decades of ordinary indoor light.
Do canvas prints need glass?
No, and conservators generally advise against it. Glazing a stretched canvas traps moisture against the surface, invites mold in a humid house and risks slicing the face if the glass ever breaks. Works on paper get glass because paper is fragile and cockles; canvas is sealed and stretched and is meant to be seen without anything in front of it.
Can a canvas print sag or warp over time?
Slack happens on cheap stretcher bars in a room that swings between damp and dry. Solid kiln-dried bars with corner keys hold tension instead. If a canvas ever does go slightly loose, tapping the keys outward at the corners takes it up again, which is a five minute job, not a reason to replace the piece.
How do you clean a canvas print?
Dust the surface with a dry microfiber cloth every few months, working from the top down in light passes. Water, glass cleaner and household sprays can lift pigment from the weave, so keep all of them away from the face; for the frame, a barely damp cloth on the wood is fine.
How do you hang a large canvas so it stays level?
Use two hooks, not one, on anything wider than 30 inches, positioned a third of the way in from each edge. Two points of contact stop the canvas pivoting when someone brushes past, and leveling becomes a matter of adjusting one side instead of rebalancing the whole piece.
